Jewel Lake
Wilderness
A Word From John and Betty Welcome in 2006 and it's Summer
Last year there was more rain than ever before in Ontario and the
resultant floods were devastating. This was matched by long hot
stretches that caused electric brown and black outs in our cities. Jewel Lake had none of these problems. The lake kept its level and
the lake springs did their job of maintaining the lake’s level. No
matter how hot it got we were always able to be in the cool shade of
trees after a swim. The children found the raft to be a center of summer
time fun and sport. The short dock was found to hide a real treasure. A
hint to two little boys for fishing fun led to hours of worm dipping and
screams of catching horror. The loons kept us entertained and the osprey nested at the end of the
lake. Their choice of nesting site was not the greatest. A real high
intensity light flash in the darkest night was a mystery until, in the
morning, the osprey nest was discovered cooked in the Hydro towers at
the end of the lake. Other osprey will rediscover the lake this
year. The beaver pond on Riding Stable Road has been drained and a culvert
has been installed so water over the road should be at an end. The real
news is that Riding Stable Road can now be said to be truly named. The
original stable was closed years ago, now a new one has been opened at
the old stable site. This will lead to summer time horseback riding and
I am sure the teenagers will be interested. The new flush toilets have been completed and ivy was planted in the
fall and new leaves have shown in fall growth. The horse shoe pit has
been completed as well and this will let us hear the ring of
metal-on-metal in afternoon competition. Margaret has a challenge for
other ringers. We were able to get the roof beams on the lengthy blue
trailer thanks to Derek, and with the strapping installed we roof it
this year. The old sauna at the lake has been a historic standby since
1928. Like many of us the years have taken their toll, it is time for a
face lift so here is a proposal. Move the log sauna building back, put
it on new footings, new floor and new cedar shingle roof. Complete the
installation of sauna facilities. Light the fire, sweat and jump into
the lake. The kayak crowd was increased when Nancy finally received her 32nd
birthday present. Fireworks lit up the sky thanks to Floyd and Crystal,
the 4th July was estatic with Margs celebratory hat. The one camp
activity that was missed was a corn roast, this will change in 2006,
dependent on the corn, of course. The grandparents crowd, of which John and Betty are only two, had
their summer visit with the grandkids. This crowd of active small people
made happy sounds in their play and discovery of nature. Yes, 2005 was a good summer, 2006 will be even better. This next note is for those readers who are new to Jewel Lake. We are
not clothing optional, we are nudists in a natural setting. We dress for
the weather and you are expected to meet the sun in your skin when the
warm summer weather arrives. The 2006 Rates are unchanged from 2004 and 2005 where else does this
happen? See our rates page for details. You may have further questions and we are happy to answer them. Our
phone is 705-495-3134. In the summer this phone is on an answering
machine that we access each day by 8 pm and return all calls; leave a
message with phone number.
Or you can email by clicking on the link below. Our computer is
accessed once a week so an email is not as effective for immediate
communication as a phone call.
